The first shot
I grew up in a small Swedish town famous for its hockey players. First-generation immigrant, raised by my mother. She worked overtime to put food on the table, and twice as hard to prove she was worth what everyone else in the company earned.
At fourteen, my class visited the office of Nicklas Nyberg, northern Sweden's most renowned real-estate developer. When the tour ended and my teacher rushed everyone back to the bus, I stayed behind.
He was packing his laptop. I walked up, told him my name, and said, "I have an internship coming up in four months. I want you to be my mentor."
He told me to leave my number with his secretary.
Months passed. I forgot. When internship deadlines came up in class, I remembered, called the office, and the secretary said, "We've been expecting your call."
One man's promise kept. That was the seed.
That internship I threw out trash, painted apartments, worked with the construction crew, and sat in board meetings as a fourteen-year-old. I watched Nicklas negotiate. I watched him handle a room.
I still work this way. Show up. State the ask. Earn the chair.
The work
I did a lot of teenage hustle in those years. I door-knocked construction companies with a drone to win filming jobs. I sold stacks of Christmas newspapers until I had enough points to claim a PlayStation 3. Even sold Minecraft servers, can you imagine?
After returning from 2 years of military service, my academic journey kicked off. A Bachelor's of Science in International Business from Umeå University. My thesis was recognised as distinguished and picked up by journals that rarely touch bachelor's work.
I sat on the northern-Sweden board of Unga Aktiespararna, the Young Shareholders organisation. I ran operations, events, sponsorships, and the software tools no one else wanted to set up. I lectured on investing when they needed someone.
Then a Master's of Science at Uppsala University, Scandinavia's oldest, founded in 1477. Accounting and Financial Management.
That is where it clicked. Momentum does not come from being busy. It comes from working on the right thing.
The wiring
I didn't notice what Sweden had given me until I started travelling.
Everywhere else, hierarchy decides who speaks. In Sweden, the idea speaks. No matter who brings it, no matter the rank, the age, or the title. That is how Klarna got built. Spotify. Volvo. IKEA.
The other thing is directness. We say the hard sentence. We skip the performance. We do business upright.
I still go back every summer. I sail when time allows. I play golf. I meet Erik, my best friend since childhood. I slow down.
The rest of the year, I bring the wiring with me.
I inherited it before I could name it.
Länge leve Sverige.
